In 1908, Jim Taylor's grandfather, Nelson A. Taylor, established a shop here in Gloversville, New York, producing canvas awnings as well as horse cart and automobile tops and tents. Over the years the firm evolved into production of canvas covers for boats, then under the leadership of Willard Taylor into one of the foremost names in marine accessories, including a specialty in marine glass and windshields. Taylor Made, as it became known, remained in the hands of its namesake family for over a century, and Jim Taylor, the last generation to lead the firm, remains justifiably proud of its achievements.
This black-on-black 1924 Ford Model T Open Cab Pickup – colloquially known as a roadster pickup – was acquired by Mr. Taylor, after it had justifiably won both AACA National Junior and Senior First Prizes in previous ownership. Using an original photograph of his grandfather Nelson's work and promotional truck, Mr. Taylor had his new acquisition finished as a replica, with a custom Taylor Made tent in the back, promoting the firm's products. Completed in time for Taylor Made's 100th anniversary, it participated in local celebrations of the centennial. Still in very good condition throughout, it is equipped with a wooden bed and artillery wheels, as well as electric headlamps, an accessory water pump, ammeter, distributor with ignition points, and a large generator, probably original.
A sentimental favorite to Mr. Taylor, for obvious reasons, this is a wonderful memento of a bygone era of automobile-based advertising, part of New York Capital Region history, an excellent conversation point for a Ford or classic boat collection, and a fine example of a Model T in one of its most desirable styles – all in one.
