How the faith of a few brought the Mini its Monte-Carlo success

Nobody really thought John Cooper’s dinky Minis had what it takes to win the Monte-Carlo Rally, not least his own company’s top brass. But, in 1964, with a little help from Paddy Hopkirk, he emphatically proved that the faith of a few can change the minds of many…

60 years, 60 stories  

In this, the original Mini’s 60th year, we’re taking a look back at some of the iconic British car’s most magical moments. And arguably the most famous is Paddy Hopkirk and Henry Liddon’s victory in the 1964 Monte-Carlo Rally. Last year, Mini produced this spectacular advert for the new John Cooper Works model paying tribute to the momentous feat. And while you’d bet your bottom dollar that it is mostly period footage, every last frame was in fact shot in the summer of 2017. One of our dealers, Machines with a Mission, was even drafted in to provide the big Ford Falcon you can see dicing with the Minis on the Col du Turini.
