A. Lange & Söhne Grosse Lange 1 Mondphase: New moon from Geneva

What 2014 will bring for the watch world is still completely open, but certain brands are already releasing news ahead of their displays at the SIHH 2014 watch exhibition. A. Lange & Söhne is readying this sensational ‘Grosse Lange 1 Mondphase’…

We were all eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Lange ‘Grand Complication’ announced last year - supposedly the most complex to come from Glashütte to date. In Geneva, it will be presented as a finished watch for the first time.

Accuracy: 99.9978% from new moon to new moon

CEO of Lange & Söhne and classic car enthusiast Wilhelm Schmid chose this application to reveal the new ‘Mondphase’. Skilfully, the moon phase indicator has now been placed behind the upper segment of the off-centre dial, with a new laser etching process making the starry sky illustrations particularly detailed and vivid. The watchmaker has succeeded in making the new watch accurate to the synodic month by 99.9978% - for the next 126 years.

Of course, these technical facts are only of interest to the mechanically minded, but so elegant and discreet is the new watch that it seems sure to have a broader appeal.
