In 1969 the Junior Zagato, a small, modern and sporty coupé, was presented at the Turin motor show. It was designed by Ercole Spada, designer of the Milanese coachbuilder Zagato, in collaboration with Alfa Romeo. The mechanics and engine of the Giulia were used as a starting point.
It was based on the floorpan of the spider model designed by Pininfarina. It was equipped with a 1300 engine with four in-line cylinders and two Weber twin-body carburettors. It had rear-wheel drive and a 5-speed manual gearbox that allowed it to reach 175 km/h. To optimise aerodynamics, the front lights were covered by a sheet of Plexiglas. A two-seater with comfortable roominess and a spacious boot, ideal for long journeys. Only 1108 examples were produced.
This magnificent car was first registered in Italy in 1972 and has kept the same number plate ever since. To date there have been only three owners in about 50 years. The car has been fully restored about 15 years ago. Today it is presented in a beautiful metallic Champagne colour (AR115), original and preserved black sky interior (easily detectable by the signs of wear visible on the driver's side). Inside it also features the Bakelite steering wheel also original and preserved. The engine has been completely overhauled in both electrical and mechanical components and now sounds like a violin. The car is equipped with its original plates (1972) and all its original documentation (owner's manuals, etc. ...) has been certified at the ASI register and the Alfa Romeo Documentation Centre. The car will be auctioned at Milano AutoClassica 2021 in incredible condition.
