It is not at all surprising that in the 20’ the Cadillac was thought to be the best car in the world. Looking at this example you cannot argue with that sentiment. The quality just oozes from every angle. This was the absolute pinnacle in cars in 1928. The 341A came in no less than 50 variants and 500 different shades, unique for the time. Up to the mid 20’s the American car market agreed Cadillacs were well built, high quality and fine to drive. They only lacked style. All that would change at the end of that decade with the introduction of the 341. This was without exaggeration a revelation in the up to then conservative Cadillac styling. Responsible for this enormous variation in Cadillac’s design offering was Harry J. Earl. A true visionary.
This example is still in beautiful condition. A few years ago the car was dismantled down to the last screw and rebuilt with enormous attention to detail. The car has a beautiful finish of dark green mudguards and green bodywork. The shut lines are splendid and the paintwork is in very good condition. The Phaeton Sport has double windscreens creating privacy for the rear passengers. As it is intended as a touring car it was prepared to weather all circumstances. The heavy quality hood fitted protects passengers properly from the elements. The car naturally has spoke wheels with good quality, correctly sized white-wall tyres. The brightwork of the headlights, around the widows and grille is in very good condition having been neatly detailed. The chassis too was fully resprayed and is in a peak state. The fully reupholstered interior in green leather still presents perfectly. The controls and gauges also are in prime shape and in great working order. The rear bench is fine and the foot boards are well covered and in good shape. The mileometer stands at 4,350 miles and considering the car’s overall condition you would be forgiven thinking this is the original mileage. It is great to see such a luxurious car from that period. All parts are so refined with its rich owners in mind. Furthermore a remarkable detail is the lockable boot and if that were not sufficient for ones luggage, there is also a luggage rack offering more space. The chrome surrounding the partition window is in lovely condition and is exemplary for the care and attention afforded to this car.
Propulsion is naturally care of a V8 engine. The engine runs fantastic having been fully overhauled and produces, for the time incredible, 90 Ps. A three-sped transmission is responsible for an unbelievable civilised ride. This car more than confirms Cadillac’s reputation with brilliant handling for a pre-war car. It would have great if Cadillac had been able to continue this high mark of quality from the 70’s onwards. The car has leaf springs all-round providing a surprising level of comfort.
This is a wonderfully restored and overhauled exceptionally rare 1928 Cadillac 341A in brilliant condition.
