We have a very fine 1960 Porsche 356B T5 Coupé. The 356B succeeded the 356A with a load of upgrades. The headlights were placed higher, there were new rear lights and an improved position of the reversing light. There were new bumpers with improved interior trim and mechanicals.

This example was restored in past and still looks and drives splendidly. We will come back later to describe a couple of nice upgrades that were fitted during the restoration. The correctly aligned panelwork is nice and thin. The silver grey paintwork is the colour it left the factory with. Although there is some slights signs of wear it is generally still in very good condition. The stands on its standard rims shod in good quality Michelin tyres.

The refurbished interior trim has stood up very well. Bucket seats with headrests have replaced the standard issue seats, providing more safety as well as lateral support. Schroth harnesses keep you securely in your seats in fast bends. You cannot miss the large blue fire extinguisher fixed next to the passengers seat, which is in addition to fire extinguisher system fitted in the luggage space. This system allows you to empty the entire extinguisher contents with one push of the button in a calamity. The top of the dashboard is clad in red vinyl with the dashboard nicely coloured-coded with the bodywork. The Porsche 356B’s dashboard is otherwise a fairly spartan, sporty and especially functional affair. The good condition of the steering wheel and instruments all contributing to their proper working.

Mechanically this Porsche 356B is in great shape. The 1.6 litre four cylinder boxer engine develops 62 Ps coupled to a well working manual 4-speed gearbox. Whilst the amount of power available seems paltry compared to todays standards, in the 60’s it was a seriously quick car. Set that against an 865 kg curb weight the like of which we do not see these days. The Porsche 356B wasn’t made for sheer raw accelerating power but rather more to optimise the properties of its deliciously flowing chassis. On your favourite twisty road moving from one bend to the next in a fantastic rhythm you reengage with what real car driving is all about. The modest engine power allows you to use all of the revs to the max without having to worry about gathering points on your driving licence.

A very nice Porsche 356B T5 coupé with a number of fine upgrades and in good shape. All you need to do is fill her up and set your sights on your favourite twisty roads.
