The 993 generation of 911 was introduced in 1994 and heralded the final iteration of the air-cooled Porsche 911 after 50 years’ development. Complete with the ‘Weissach’ multilink rear suspension design, the car was a substantial step forward from the previous 964 model, being much more civilised and modern.

The Turbo variant was introduced just one year later, featuring a twin-turbocharged, 408bhp 3.6-litre engine in harness with a six-speed gearbox and four-wheel drive system for the first time, derived from the limited production 959 homologation special. Unsurprisingly, the car was highly rated by the motoring press at the time as the ultimate all-weather supercar.

Like previous generations of the Turbo, the 993 Turbo was a successful combination of extreme performance with a luxurious interior and every technology that Porsche could include within a production car. The car reached 100 mph in less than 10 seconds, powering on to a top speed of 184 mph.

This car was delivered new on 15 January 1997 by Lancaster’s Garage in Cambridge. It was finished in the striking original colour of Ocean Blue Metallic (E1E1) with a Marble Grey interior set off by Midnight Blue Leather on the steering wheel, dash top and door caps.

The car has a superb and complete annual service history, first at official Porsche garages and then, since 2004, with specialists, first GT One and then Autofarm. The car has had one dedicated Porsche Club member owner for the last 11 years and has been scrupulously maintained during that time.

The Turbo featured in 911 & Porsche magazine in November 2016 and was described in glowing terms in comparison with the latest 991 Turbo S.

The 993 remains one of our favourite mass-produced 911s, be it in Carrera, Carrera S or Turbo format. It delivers modern performance and useability mixed with all the traditional air-cooled hallmarks of compact dimensions and the classic, upright windscreen which affords such excellent all-round visibility.

Sit in the latest 911 today and you are surrounded by digital instrument clusters and infotainment systems. While it’s a fabulous device for travelling quickly and quietly, it has obviously lost the immediacy and involvement of the earlier cars.

The 993 Turbo, on the other hand, is great way for a Porsche enthusiast to travel fast. It retains the classic feel with the iconic instrument cluster while delivering huge ground-covering pace effortlessly.

This 993 offers the happy combination of a most attractive specification, excellent history file and condition that is smart but usable. It would probably be our first choice for rapid travel to and from a 2 Litre Cup meeting on the Continent!
